Pomegranates




Today we learned about the Pomegranate. We had never eaten one and found them to be delicious and fascinating! Eating one led to learning nutritional facts, history, geography and Biblical relevance. It was a fun and simple lesson. ~
Just a few interesting facts:

Fight Breast Cancer
Israeli researchers found that pomegranate seed oil causes breast cancer cells to self-destruct, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

Pomegranate juice may contain close to three times the antioxidants as green tea or red wine. Antioxidants fight against free radicals -- unstable molecules that can damage DNA and cell membranes. This cellular damage has been linked to all kinds of diseases including cancer.

It may help support healthy blood flow because of its iron properties. Pomegranate supports the blood by supplying it with iron, thus may help prevent anemia symptoms that include exhaustion, dizziness, weakness, and hear loss.

Aside from having lots of anti-oxidants, pomegranate also might have some anti-viral properties.

Exodus chapter 28:33-34 directed that images of pomegranates be woven onto the borders of Hebrew priestly robes. 1 Kings chapter 7:13-22 describes pomegrantes depicted in the temple King Solomon built in Jerusalem. Jewish tradition teaches that the pomegranate is a symbol for righteousness, because it is said to have 613 seeds which corresponds with the 613 mitzvot or commandments of the Torah. For this reason and others many Jews eat pomegranates on Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot.


* The Ancient Egyptians were buried with pomegranates. The Babylonians believed chewing the seeds before battle made them invincible

Aside from having lots of anti-oxidants, pomegranate also might have some anti-viral properties.

. Pomegranate juice and extract is thought by some women to help in overcoming the feeling of general malaise during menopause.

Song of Solomon 8:2 I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
